A 53-year-old man drowned Saturday at the Great Salt Lake despite clear skies and calm waters.

The man had rented a kayak from a marina on Antelope Island and had made it about half a mile out when a bicyclist saw that he was out of the kayak and in the water about 100 yards from the causeway, said Davis County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Boydston. About 3:30 p.m., the bicyclist hopped into a boat and brought the man back to shore.

Someone on shore performed CPR and called 911, but no one could resuscitate the man.

Investigators do not know what went wrong on the waters, which were relatively calm at the time, but the man reportedly was not wearing a life vest, Boydston added.

His name was being withheld until the sheriff’s office can notify his family. The man is from out of state, but Boydston was not sure which state he lived in, and since he was alone, what brought him to Utah
