Ernie Torres teaches skydiving and has a black belt in karate. But both at once? He did it, setting a world record for breaking the most boards in a free fall .

Plummeting 12,000 feet in a free fall, he managed to smash 12 pine boards in half during those 70 seconds. It was a jump so extreme he had to use oxygen so that his brain would remember to pull the parachute cord.

“As if throwing myself from an airplane and falling towards the earth at terminal velocity wasn’t exciting enough, I thought I’d throw a little karate in the mix and try to smash a world record while I was at it,” the UK’s Daily Mail quotes him as saying.

Team members from Skydive Arizona held the wooden boards for him to chop. They jumped from 16,000 feet and opened their parachutes at 4,000 feet.

“(70 seconds) may seem like forever to some but it’s not very long when you’re trying to break a world record,” said Torres, who also serves in the U.S. Navy and is currently stationed in Virginia.

The previous record of seven broken boards was set in by Jason David Frank.

“It really was one of the greatest adrenaline rushes of my life,” Torres said in the Daily Mail.

Torres is donating money raised from the event to the Wounded Warrior Project.
