Most of Greenland is covered by snow during the winter months creating fantastic opportunities to snowmobile in unspoiled landscapes for snowmobiling enthusiasts.
Snowmobiling has become a mainstay of local culture all over Greenland, and Destination Arctic Circle sports the largest, most accessible, and ridable mountain zone of any region in the country. Snowmobiling in the Arctic is a world of pure fun.
Frozen lakes and fiords, steep mountains, rolling hills, trails and powder, it’s all here for the taking – and there’s plenty more where it came from. Because this is more than backcountry. This is deepcountry.
So join a local crew of riders for a day of boondocking or jump on the back of a cruising machine for a climb to a glacier peak. And today you can even ride the entire Arctic Circle Trail in Winter, all 180 kilometers from Sismiut to Kangerlussuaq.
For many people in Greenland the snowmobile has assumed the role of the modern successor to the dogsled. The vast majority of hunters, however, have chosen to stick to the traditional sleds and in certain cases hunting is not allowed on snowmobiles. The snowmobile is therefore first and foremost a vehicle for recreation and leisure.
Snowmobiling does not always go hand in hand with dog sledding. In the municipalities where there are sled dogs, there are often rules stipulating that snowmobiles may not be driven on traditional sled tracks and routes.
Renting of snowmobiles in Greenland
Snowmobiles are typically rented out to travelers during the winter season, which runs from November to February or March depending on the amount of snow. From Kangerlussuaq you can also take up the extreme challenge of driving 200 km (125 miles) across the ice sheet to a former American radar station, DYE-2.
At Sisimiut it is possible to take a snowmobile trip accompanied by a guide or to drive out to a hut in the middle of the magnificent scenery with an overnight stay included. This is also possible on Lyngmarksbræen near Qeqertarsuaq. The towns of Aasiaat, Maniitsoq, Kangerlussuaq and Narsarsuaq also have snowmobiles available for rent.
