Two men, one hill. Each has their own method of attack. Will gas or human-power prevail?

After months of Red Bull X-Alps training, it’s no surprise fan favourite Coconea wants to mix it up a bit. Fortunately, he’s got the help of his moto-riding pal Martin Freinademetz to encourage him to truly charge up the mountain in proper form. Being tough enough to beat a motorcycle is the kind of shape he’ll need to be in to have a chance at winning the Red Bull X-Alps.

The video gives a good look at the hard work X-Alps athletes have been doing. It’s not just a race on foot, it’s a race on foot with a giant pack attached to your back, often scrambling hand-over-hand up steep terrain.

Once on the Red Bull X-Alps course, competitors will be doing this in often unfamiliar territory, for days on end. And while they’ll have assistants to help them, the trip is long and grueling – a mental challenge as well as a physical one.

So who wins the charge up to the peak — Coconea under natural power, or Freinademetz using horsepower? Well, we won’t give away too much but remember this: to win the race, you’ve got to come down as well as up.
