A gruelling running event which includes a mid race abseil and even a short swim will be held in Llanberis and Caernarfon next week.

Man v Mountain is a 20 mile run with 13 miles uphill and takes the competitors from sea level all the way up to the peak of 1085m high Snowdon.

Part of the race includes running a lung busting “vertical kilometre” a 1,000m ascent with a 250km climb which organisers have dubbed a “race within a race” and will have it’s own winners.

A spokesman for Rat Race who are organising the event, said: “Intrepid adventurers will tackle this superb course across the beautiful rugged landscape of Snowdonia.

“The event starts at 8am and is 20 miles in total.

“If you are a marathon-munching whippet, don’t let the distance lull you into underestimating this challenge however because the first 13 of those miles are all uphill as you tackle the 1085m peak of Snowdon from sea level.

“The first five miles are predominantly on road but the rest is off road so trail running shoes are definitely the right choice.

“It’s a stunning area and as you get higher, the scenery just gets better and better.

“If the weather is kind take a moment at the summit to enjoy the view and look directly east at the remains of the slate quarries of Dinorwig – that’s where you’re going next.

“The route down is the well trodden Snowdon path into Llanberis.

“You will come across the Vertical Kilometre – a 1000m long ascent rising more than 250m in height. This is timed and provides you with a “race-within-a-race.”

“Trophies for fastest male and fastest female will be awarded for the Vertical Kilometre.

“After that brutal assault on your legs there’s plenty more challenges to come before you earn your medal, including an abseil. The swim is less than 25m and will be supported by safety Kayaks and a guide rope. You can miss it out but the run alternative is an extra 500m instead.”

“What we’ve tried to create is a challenging and exciting run. This document is designed to provide you with what you need to know to prepare yourself for a great weekend in Wales.”

Gwynedd Councillor for Llanberis, Trefor Edwards, said: “I look forward to all events that come to Llanberis, as they can only do good to our businesses here.

“It’s good for the wider economy, and I expect not just competitors but friends and family and those coming here to watch will be staying in the area.”
