The Adventure Rock Bouldering Competition kicks off Wednesday in Mountain Village.
Summer has arrived, drying out local crags, bouldering areas and climbing walls in the region. But climbers don’t have to venture far into the wild to find routes — Adventure Rock in Mountain Village offers an array of climbs for monkeying around or practicing harder stuff.
And on Wednesday, rock hounds are invited to test their crimp strength, one-fingered holds and dyno skills during the Adventure Rock Bouldering Competition Series, a summer-long bouldering competition in Mountain Village.
The series sees climbers scrambling up the varied routes of Adventure Rock, the large bouldering structure that sits in the Conference Center Plaza.
The series begins Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. There will be a men and women’s division and divisions for boys and girls under 13. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners.
“Aside from competitors, the town also encourages spectators to participate in the series as it provides a general good time with music and bouldering,” said event organizer Dave Bangert. “And as always, there will be a little something for every kid who competes.”
All climbers are invited to compete regardless of ability and are encouraged to register the day of the event.
The Competition Series will continue throughout the summer, with future events scheduled for July 11, Aug. 1 and Aug. 22. The climbing events coincide with the market on the Plaza, the Mountain Village’s weekly Farmers Market, which comes to Heritage Plaza every Wednesday.
Prize sponsors include BootDoctors and Dakine.
Bangert will be setting new routes with Craig Stein and Jonathon Tracy, recreation specialists with the town, on the day of each competition. As a result, the Adventure Rock will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on competition days.
This marks the Adventure Rock Bouldering Competition’s fifth year in Mountain Village.
The Town of Mountain Village installed the Adventure Rock nine years ago with funding from various entities. It is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information about the competition and Adventure Rock, please contact the town’s Recreation Department at (970) 369-8215.
